Mayo Hibi battled pass her way to Australian Open 2021

The 2021 Australian Open women’s singles qualifiers have been determined after a fierce four-day qualifying event came to a close on Wednesday in Dubai, with 16 women booking their spots in the main draw of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. Aoyama and Shibahara captured the doubles title

No.5 seeds Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara captured their fourth team title at the 2021 Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open, defeating No.8 seeds Hayley Carter and Luisa Stefani 7-6(5) 6-4. The Japanese duo, who first paired at the 2019 Toray Pan Pacific, capped off a successful week that began with having to save four match points to defeat Andrea Klepac and Marta Kostyuk in the first round, prevailing 4-6, 7-5, 12-10, and included a dominant win over top seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals. Bublik retires due to injury in final of Antalya Open

Alexander Bublik retired in the final of Antalya Open against Aussies player on Wednesday, 13th January. The fourth-seeded Australian was leading eight seed Alexander Bublik 2-0 in the first set, when the Kazakhstani retired after seven minutes of the final. Bublik attempted to play after extensive physio, but had twisted his right ankle on Tuesday in his semi-final victory over Jeremy Chardy of France. Resumption of Asian 14&U tour

Asian Tennis Federation is pleased to announce plans for the resumption of Asian 14 & Under tour and the tour is set to resume in the week commencing 18th January 2021. To start the resumption of the circuit for the first 3 months of 2021 i.e., till 31st March 2021 only Category 2. An additional Grade “2A” is being introduced for the first 3 months of 2021. The 14 & under national events of a country could be run as part of ATF 14 & under circuit with reduced ATF ranking points in the countries facing strict lockdown and where there is complete ban on inbound foreign travel. Obituary – Randy Villanueva

The Asian tennis community is mourning the loss of former Vice President of Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) Mr. Randy Villanueva, who left for heavenly abode. As former Vice President of PHILTA and long-time Davis Cup administrator for Philippines, Villanueva helped revive the popularity of tennis that saw the PH Davis Cup team rise to the elite Group I in the Asia Oceania Zone. Former PH Davis Cup non-playing captain Roland Kraut also shared his unforgettable memories with Villanueva including his first stint as Davis Cup captain in 2014. “Will miss this. Good times. Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei tasted victory in the women’s doubles final at Italian Open with  partner, Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic on Sunday. The duo, top-seeded at the women’s doubles event of the tournament, Hsieh and Strycova sealed their fourth title of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany and Raluca Olaru of Romania. Compatriots Elena and Yulia will face each other in Italian Open

Elena Rybakina and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan will go head to head in the third round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. In the second-round match world number 30 Putintseva ousted Croatian Petra Martic 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Nishikori wins first match in a year

Kei Nishikori defeated two-time ATP Tour titlist Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 7-6(3) on Monday evening to reach the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. It is the first win of the season for the Japanese star. The clay tournament is a run up to French Open which is slated to start soon. Osaka defeats Giorgi in straight sets to reach the third round

Japanese Naomi Osaka demolished Italian Camila Giorgi in straight sets to set up 3rd round clash with Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. Osaka spent only 1hr 9min on court to brush aside Giorgi, the world number 74, winning 6-1, 6-2. Osaka hit 14 winners to dominate her hard-hitting Italian opponent. Naomi Osaka put on a solid serving performance to beat Dayana Yastremska 6-3, 6-1 at the Southern and Western Open on Tuesday. Schedule confirmed for TOKYO 2020 Paralympic Games

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has confirmed the event line-up for each session of the Paralympic Games, following their postponement to 2021. The International Paralympic Committee agreed in April that, given the critical impact of the competition schedule on every aspect of preparation, each session of the 2021 competition would in principle be scheduled as originally planned for 2020. The International Tennis Federation has announced plans for the resumption of play on the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors, the ITF Seniors Tour, the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour. The plans have been drawn up in collaboration with each tour’s committee and approved by the ITF Board, with the health and safety of all involved the primary focus in all decision-making. Tokyo 2020 announces schedule for Olympic Tennis Event

The Tokyo Organising Committee has confirmed the Olympic Tennis event schedule after the 2020 Games were postponed to 2021. Tokyo 2020 and the International Olympic Committee agreed in April that each session of the 2021 would in principle be schedule as planned for 2020. This has been reflected in the confirmed competition schedule, which for operational reasons remains subject to change. The Olympic Tennis Event in 2021 will take place in the same competition venue (Ariake) as previously planned for 2020. Rankings will now cover a period of 22 months (March 2019 – December 2020) The ATP has announced how the revised FedEx ATP Rankings will be calculated once the Tour resumes. The Rankings, which reflect a player’s standing among the world’s best players and are used for tournament entry and seedings, are the lifeblood of professional tennis. In anticipation of a return to competition in August, the Rankings, which traditionally operate on a “Best 18” results basis over 52 weeks, will now cover a period of 22 months (March 2019 – December 2020). ITF WTT events to resume in August

The International Tennis Federation has announced that ITF World Tennis Tour will resume from 3 August for the women’s events and 17 August for the men’s events and both will include singles qualifying, main draw singles and doubles rounds. This follows the announcements made today by the ATP, WTA, USTA and FFT regarding the resumption of the tours and the staging of the US Open and Roland Garros. ATF has extended the suspended of all tournaments till 31st July

Asian Tennis Federation has extended suspension of all ATF tournaments till 31st July 2020, due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic. This announcement is in line with the earlier announcement made by ITF effecting similar suspension of all ITF tournaments. Main and immediate concern for Asian Tennis Federation is health and safety of players. Covid-19 global pandemic prevents international tournaments at this stage, however some nations are witnessing partial lifting of the restrictions. The ATF 14 & under rankings will also remain frozen till further notice. Sania Mirza’s return to Fed Cup action for the first time since 2016 saw India book their place in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Play-offs after overcoming Korea, Rep., Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan to finish second behind China in Dubai. ATF freezes Asian 14 & under rankings

Asian Tennis Federation had already suspended all the tennis tournaments and tennis related activities till Monday 8th June 2020, keeping in line the decision of ITF/ ATP/WTA with the evolving situation of covid-19 across the globe. The above effected cancellation of all the tournaments from the week of 16th March 2020 till 7th June 2020 effectively means no ATF 14& under tournaments for a duration of 12 weeks. Asian Tennis Federation joins the sport’s governing body, the ITF, and the professional tours, the ATP and WTA in announcing a further suspension of all ATF tournament activity until 13th July, 2020 in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Asian Tennis Federation had earlier suspended all the tennis activities till 8th June 2020. The All England Lawn Tennis Club and LTA also made an announcement to cancel The Championships , Wimbledon for the year 2020. Asian Tennis Federation will make sincere efforts to ensure that as many tournaments as possible can be rescheduled for later in the year.

Asian Tennis Federation is joining the International Sport’s governing body, the ITF, and the Professional Tours, the ATP and WTA in announcing a suspension of all tournament activity until Monday June 8th, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Asian Tennis Federation had earlier suspended all the tennis activities till and inclusion of week of 20th April 2020. Asian Tennis Federation will make sincere efforts to ensure that as many tournaments as possible can be rescheduled for later in the year. Asian Tennis Federation office remains open for business as usual, with staff currently working from home and the ATF staff would be available on emails for any assistance.


Asian Tennis Federation has announced a six-week postponement of all tournament activity in response to increasing health and safety concerns relating to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The move brings the Asian  Tennis Federation in line with the sport’s governing body, the International Tennis Federation, and the ATP Tour, both of which made similar announcements on Thursday. All Asian Tennis Federation events scheduled until (and including) the week of April 20th will therefore be postponed with immediate effect. The 2020 edition of the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup Asia Oceania Pre-Qualifying was held from 21st Feb – 29th Feb 2020 at Jakarta, Indonesia. Top seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strycova booked a ticket for their maiden Australian Open women’s doubles final with a first-class display on Margaret Court Arena. The pair defeated Czech duo and No 4 seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 6-3. Hsieh-Strycova will face No 2 seeds and 2018 champions Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos in the finals. The ITF West Asia 13 & Under Development Championships 2019 was held in Dubai, UAE from 5th – 12th December 2019. A total of 11 countries participated in the Championship. Shintaro Mochizuki made history on Sunday 14th July 2019 by becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam title beating Carlos Gimeno Valero of Spain by 6-3, 6-2, in the Wimbledon boys singles final. Update on ATF 14 & Under ranking ATF has been running the 14 & under circuit successfully for the past few years . The number of tournaments , players and the countries hosting these tournaments have grown steadily over the years. The 14 & under rankings have now been established strongly and are being considered for making many development related decisions. To further strengthen the 14 & under rankings and the improve the usage, ATF has further decided to award points to the players for the ITF World Junior final Qualifying tournament as well. Rushil khosla prevails at Grade A 14& Under tournament in Kazakhstan

Rushil Khosla from India proved too good for his opponents in the above tournament. He won the tournament without dropping a set and defeating his doubles partner Danir Kaldybekov (KAZ) 60, 61 in a one-sided finals. Later Rushil and Danir combined well to win the doubles crown by winning the doubles final 62, 64. Double crown in the tournament will make Rushil climb up to top ranking in the ATF U14 rankings. Girls section was no different, with the top seed Karina Jumaznova (KAZ) winning the tournament without dropping a set defeating compatriot Asem Shoybek easily 62, 63. Division 1 took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and the tournament saw some really interesting results. Yuvan Nandan of India showed some real calibre as he made his way to the finals in the week 2 of Division 1.
