Pahwa and Chowdhury Crowned Champions at Asian 14&U Grade A Tournament (South Asia)
India’s Tavish Pahwa and Shreeniti Chowdhury reserved their spots in the ITF Asian Junior Championship after being crowned champions in the Asian 14&U Grade A Tournament (South Asia) that concluded in Hyderabad, India on June 1.
Apart from the winners, the two finalists — Aaradhya Mhasde and Jensi Dipkabhai — also qualified for the ITF Asian Junior Championships on the back of their run to the finals bof boys and girls events respectively.
ITF Asian Junior Championships will be held in September in Cambodia.
The South Asia leg of the tournament, held from May 27 to June 1, witnessed a week of intense competition, featuring fierce battles, and unexpected upsets.
In the boys’ singles competition. Unseeded Aaradhya Mhasde (India) upset the top-seeded Dharma Pantaratorn (Thailand) 6-2 6-3 in a dramatic semifinal.
In the second semifinal second-seeded Tavish Pahwa (India) defeated Varad Undre (India) 6-3 6-4.
The final turned out to be a lop-sided affair with Pahwa hammering Mhasde 6-0 6-2 to claim the boys’ singles title.
The girls’ singles category mirrored the excitement of the boys’, with upsets shaking things up.
Fourth-seed Shreeniti Chowdhury (India) delivered a stunning performance, ousting the top-seeded Ilima Guseynova (Turkmenistan) 6-1 6-3 in the semi-finals.
The other semifinal was an all-Indian clash, with Jensi Dipkabhai edging out Harsha Karthika in a hard-fought battle 6-2, 6-7(3) 6-2.
Shreeniti Chowdhury continued her impressive run, clinching the girls’ singles title with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Jensi Dipkabhai.
The excitement didn’t stop there. The doubles competition saw the top-seeded team of Tavish Pahwa (India) and Dharma Pantaratorn (Thailand) winning the title.
In the girls’ doubles event, the top-seeded Ilima Guseynova (Turkmenistan), despite her singles setback, found redemption by partnering with India’s Karthika Padmakumar to win the championship.
