US OPEN: Bopanna and Sutjiadi stay in mixed doubles title hunt

NEW YORK, September 2: India’s Rohan Bopanna stayed in hunt for his third Grand Slam title by reaching the mixed doubles semifinal at the US Open with Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi.

Even at 44, Bopanna is playing solid tennis. The eighth seeded Indo-Indonesian team knocked out fourth seeds Matthew Ebden (AUS) Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) 7-6 (4) 2-6 10-7 in the quarterfinals.

They will now fight it out with local favourites Taylor Townsend Donald Young for a place in the summit clash.

Bopanna and Ebden are regular partners on the ATP Tour. They had won the 2024 Australian Open which was first men’s doubles Grand Slam title for Bopanna.

Bopanna had won his Grand Slam when he triumphed at the French Open mixed doubles event with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski in 2017.

Elsewhere, Kazakshtan’s Anna Danilina reached the women’s doubles quarterfinals with partner Irina Khromacheva but made an exit from the mixed doubles along with partner Harri Heliovaara (FIN).

Anna and Irina beat Tereza Mihalikova (SLO) and Olivia Nicholls (GBR) 6-4 6-4 in the third round in one hour and 29 minutes.

In mixed, Anna and Heliovaara lost 7-6 (3) 3-6 8-10 to the American team of Taylor Townsend Donald Young.

Shuai Zhang (CHN) and Hao-Ching Chan (TPE) are the other Asian players left in the women’s doubles draw. They play quarterfinals with their respective partners.

China’s Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng is the lone Asian player left in the women’s singles draw. The world number seven is set to take on world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals.

It will be third meeting between the two players and Zheng is yet to win against Sabalenka. Zheng had lost this year’s Australian Open final and 2023 US Open quarterfinal to Sabalenka.
