Asia/Oceania’s Finest: Teams Qualify for ITF WJTC Girls’ Finals. Kuching, Malaysia.

The Indo-Chinese pair and second-seeded doubles team of Sania Mirza & Shuai Zhang defeated the third seeds Kaitlyn Christian of the USA and her Kiwi partner Erin Routliffe in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to lift the WTA 500 Ostrava Open title in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

It took the second seeds only four minutes over an hour to finish off the final match proceedings to pocket the winners’ trophy comfortably.

With this win, the 34-year-old, Mirza has won her career’s 43rd WTA Tour doubles title, it’s her first trophy in the 2021 season, and second after maternity break (2020 Hobart Open being the first one).

Her previous best result this year came in August at the WTA 250 Tennis in the Land event in Cleveland where she and her partner Christina McHale were overpowered by the Japanese duo of Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in the Final.

Zhang lifted her 3rd trophy of the 2021 adding one more to the score of 10 in her double career and brings her closer to career high doubles rank of 9 achieved in March 2019.

Mirza and Zhang will split the wieners purse of $25,230 as winners and earn 470 WTA ranking points each. Mirza is also set to regain entry into the Top 100 in doubles and take over the number one spot among Indian female players’ rankings on the WTA Tour in the doubles category.
