Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin out played Christian Chilean , who was seeded 13th at the US Open.
Kukushkin had to fight hard to win in five sets , setting up a third round encounter with Australian Jordan Thompson.
The 32-year-old Kazakhstan player won the first two sets with ease, before Garin hit back in the next two sets to level the match at two sets all. However Mikhail stayed composed and managed to win the deciding set to emerge winner in five sets, 6-2 6-1 3-6 4-6 7-5 in a match lasting just under four hours.
Kukushkin helped his cause by converting 9 out of 13 of break points available to him , as against 6 out of 16 by his Chilean opponent.
Kukushkin will next face ,63rd Ranked, Australian Thompson, who booked his spot in the Round of 16 with a 6-1 6-4 3-6 6-3 triumph over Belarusian Egor Gerasimov.
