The fifth seeded all-Japanese duo of Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama are all set to face the Ladies’ doubles defending champion Hsieh Su-wei, and her Belgian partner Elise Mertens, in semi-finals of The Championships at All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, United Kingdom today.
With the 2020 edition of Wimbledon getting cancelled last year, Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei is the defending Champion in Ladies’ doubles, having won the title in 2019.
She did it with Czech partner Barbora Strýcová after defeating Canadian-Chinese pairing of Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan in straight sets 62 64.
Su-wei is, in fact, two-time doubles champion at The Championships. Her maiden win came in 2013 with China’s Peng Shuai as her partner then.
To stop Su-wei’s quest for second consecutive and third overall Ladies’ doubles title at Wimbledon, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bound Japanese duo of Shibahara and Aoyama are eager to stop the Chinese Taipei’s superstar and script their own maiden historic run to the finals in the doubles competition.
33-year-old Osaka born Aoyama’s best result yet at The Championships has been a semis appearance in 2013 whereas her partner Shibahara, who is ten years younger to Aoyama, has reached the semi-finals in her maiden participation at Wimbledon.
Among other competitions at The Championships, China’s Zhang Shuai and her Aussie partner John Peers lost their quarters tie in straight sets 26 46 to fourth seeded French-American team of Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Nicole Melichar.
With this result, the Ladies’ doubles remains the only competition with Asian participation and at least one Asian player is assured of the finals spot as Hsieh Su-Wei-Elise Mertens take on Japanese players Shibahara-Aoyama in the first semi-finals of the day.
