Chinese Taipei’s Hseih Su-wei and Japanese duo of Shibahara-Aoyama keep Asian hopes alive in Women’s doubles
- Zhang Shuai (CHN) and John Peers (AUS) knock out sixth seeded Ivan Dodig (CRO) and Latisha Chan (TPE) in Mixed doubles to enter quarters
Three Asian women are going strong at The Championships this year as we move closer to the conclusion of Wimbledon 2021.
In the Ladies’ doubles, three players – Hseih Su-wei of Chinese Taipei, Japan’s Ena Shibahara and her compatriot Shuko Aoyama – have justified their seedings and have entered the semi-finals.
Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei, third in the doubles seeding, along with Belgian Elise Mertens will play the fifth seeded Japanese duo of Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama in one of the two semis slated to be played on day 10 of Wimbledon on 9th of July.
From the Mixed doubles draw, China’s Zhang Shuai partnering with Aussie John Peers scored an upset straight sets win 64 76 over higher seeded pairing of Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Chinese Taipei player Latisha Chan.
However, Indian Grand Slam winners Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza’s journey at the Wimbledon was cut short by 14th seeds Jean-Julien Rojer (NED) and Andreja Klepac (SLO) in a nail-biting three setter which went down to tie-break 63 36 119 .
Today, at Wimbledon, Asian representation will only be on display in the Mixed doubles quarter-finals tie between 17th seeded Aussie-Chinese pairing of John Peers and Zhang Shuai and fourth seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France and his American partner Nicole Melichar.
