US OPEN: Putintseva goes out; Bopanna-Sutjiadi advance to mixed 3rd round
NEW YORK, AUGUST 31: Yulia Putintseva’s US Open campaign came to an end following defeat against fifth seed Jasmine Paolini in the third round but the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna (IND) and Aldila Sutjiadi (INA) moved to the quarterfinals.
Putintseva had her chances to mount a comeback when she had breakpoints in the sixth game of the second set but could not cash in on and lost the contest 3-6 4-6 to the Italian, who had reached the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon this season.
Both players hit the ball hard but Paolini made fewer unforced errors — 23 to 33 of her Kazakhstan rival — to march into the pre-quarterfinals.
With Putintseva’s defeat, Asia now has two players left in the women’s singles draw — Olympic champion from China Qinweng Zheng and her compatriot Yafan Wang.
Asia’s other players suffered defeats in different doubles events.
The Chinese-Japanese combo of Xinyu Jiang and Makoto Nonimiya lost the women’s doubles second round 3-6 3-6 to seventh seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok (UKR) and Jelena Ostapenko (LAT).
Another Asian team to exit was Japan’s Ena Shibahara and Aldila Sutjiadi from Indonesia, seeded 16th. They took the lead by pocketing the opening set but eventually lost their women’s doubles second round 6-4 5-7 3-6 to Tereza Mihalikova (SLO) and Olivia Nicholls (GBR).
However, Shuai Zhang (CHN) brought some cheers when she combined with Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) to progress to the women’s doubles third round with a tough 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Magda Linette (POL) and Peyton Stearns (USA).
Later, Bopanna and Sutjiyadi returned from the brink to secure their passage into the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
The eighth-seeded pair had struggled to win even a single game in the opening set but mounted a great comeback to win 0-6 7-6(5) 10-7 against Katerina Siniakova (CZE) and John Peers (AUS).
