Japan leads the way as four teams book World Junior Tennis Finals spots in Kuching

The girls’ week of the ITF World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying came to a close in Kuching, Malaysia with Japan, Korea Republic, China P.R. and India finishing as the top four teams and earning their places in the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals later this year. The tournament was held from 21 to 26 April, and after several important days of team competition, those four nations came through to keep their journey going.

Japan ended the week at the top of the standings and signed off in strong fashion by beating Korea Republic 2-0 in the final tie. Korea finished second, while China P.R. took third place and India finished fourth. All four teams now move on from Kuching to the World Finals in Prostejov, Czechia, where the best U14 nations from different regions will come together in August.

In many ways, the outcome reflected the quality that had been building through the week. Japan looked solid and steady across the competition and found the right finish when it mattered most. Korea Republic also put together a very strong campaign, while China P.R. and India did enough to stay inside the top four and secure the qualifying places that every team had come to Kuching chasing.

This event was always going to be an important stop on the junior pathway. As the preview to the tournament had already made clear, the Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying stage is where the road begins to narrow. Earlier in the season, the pre-qualifying events in Phan Thiet, Vietnam had already decided which additional teams would stay alive in the race. From there, the focus shifted to Kuching, where the region’s top teams came together for the final qualifying stage. In the girls’ competition, only four teams were going to move forward, and that gave every tie real importance from the start.

That is what makes events like this so important. At the U14 level, it is not only about results, but also about learning how to play for the team, handle pressure and grow through international competition. All of that was seen in Kuching over the week. In the end, Japan finished first, Korea Republic second, China P.R. third and India fourth, and those four teams will now carry the Asia/Oceania challenge forward to Prostejov. For the others, it was still a valuable week of experience. But for the four teams that qualified, Kuching was the step that kept their journey to the World Finals alive.
