The boys’ week of the ITF World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying ended in Kuching, Malaysia with Japan, Australia, Thailand and Indonesia finishing as the top four teams and securing their places in the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals. The boys’ competition was held from 28 April to 3 May, and with four qualification spots available, every day carried real importance.
In the end, it was Japan who led the way. They closed the week by beating Australia 2-1 to finish first overall, while Thailand claimed third place with a 2-0 win over Indonesia in the 3rd-4th playoff. Those results confirmed the final order at the top, with Japan first, Australia second, Thailand third and Indonesia fourth.
That top four mattered because all four teams now move on to the World Finals in Prostejov, Czechia, which are scheduled for 3 to 8 August 2026. The ITF’s competition format makes this stage especially important, as the Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying event is the last regional hurdle before the best young teams go forward to the world stage.
The road to Kuching had begun earlier in the year in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, with the Asia/Oceania Pre Qualifying events. From there, teams worked their way into the final qualifying stage in Malaysia. That is why this event carried extra importance. By the time the teams reached Kuching, they were no longer just playing another junior tournament, they were playing to keep their journey to the World Finals alive.
For the teams that missed out, it was still an important week of learning and exposure. But for the four qualifiers, Kuching meant something bigger. It was the week that kept their season moving and their hopes alive. And now, with Japan, Australia, Thailand and Indonesia are through, the Asia/Oceania boys’ challenge will continue in Prostejov later this year.
