Chinese Taipei edges India to top spot as Colombo wraps up on a high

The ITF Asia 14&U Development Championships in Colombo came to an end with another lively week of competition, and when it was all over, Chinese Taipei finished first overall, with India ending the series in second place.

Week 2, the final week of the championships, brought with it another set of strong and impressive performances. In the boys’ singles, Uzbekistan’s Saidaslam Farkhodov produced a composed display in the final to defeat Indonesia’s Ethan Frans 6-3 6-3 and take the title. In the girls’ singles, Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ke-chieh finished her week on a high as she beat India’s Srishti Kiran 6-1 6-4 to lift the crown. For Srishti, it marked another impressive run in Colombo, as the Indian youngster finished runner-up in both weeks of the girls’ singles event.

There was success for Indonesia in the doubles, with Ethan Frans and Komang Purustama winning the boys’ doubles title after a 6-2 6-2 victory over the Indian pair of Taanish Nanda and Puneeth Manohar. Puneeth, had already enjoyed a memorable week earlier in the series, having won the boys’ singles title in Week 1. In the girls’ doubles, Meng Chi and Hsu Ke-chieh of Chinese Taipei completed a fine week by beating Thailand’s A. Paisarnpanuwong and P. Daungkhiaw 6-2 6-1 in the final.

If Week 1 had already shown the depth of promise on display in Colombo, the closing week only added to that feeling. There were strong runs from players across the region, and the finals once again reflected how competitive these championships have become. For India, the performances across both weeks were especially encouraging, with Srishti reaching both girls’ singles finals and the team also enjoying another deep run in the doubles. But in the end, Chinese Taipei’s consistency across the weeks proved decisive, earning them the top spot ahead of India.

Over the two weeks, Colombo proved to be an ideal setting for these championships, giving Asia’s young players the chance to test themselves, learn, compete and grow. And with Chinese Taipei finishing first and India second, the tournament once again showed how promising the future of tennis in the region can be.
