Asian Players Create Milestones at the 2025 US Open

The 2025 US Open proved to be a historic tournament for Asian tennis, with breakthrough performances, inspiring comebacks and first-ever milestones that underlined the region’s growing presence on the global stage. From the Philippines to Hong Kong and Japan, Asian players left their mark in Flushing Meadows.

Eala’s Historic Philippine First

Alexandra Eala scripted a defining chapter for Philippine tennis when she stunned 14th seed Clara Tauson in the opening round. Rallying from 1–5 down in the third set, the 20-year-old clawed her way back to win 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11). With this victory, Eala became the first Filipino player in the Open Era to win a main-draw match at a Grand Slam. Her fearless shot-making and mental grit not only delivered a personal breakthrough but also ignited new hope for tennis in her country.

Wong Puts Hong Kong on the Map

Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong carved out his own slice of history. The 21-year-old defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets to become the first Hong Kong man in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles match. Wong’s run did not stop there; he marched into the third round, making him the first from his territory to reach that stage at the US Open. Having trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy, Wong showcased composure and maturity, signaling the rise of Hong Kong as a tennis contender.

Osaka’s Inspiring Comeback

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka reminded the tennis world of her pedigree with a stirring run in New York. Returning from maternity leave and time away from the sport, the Japanese star powered her way into the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2021. Her straight sets win over Karolina Muchova highlighted her resurgence. Though she eventually bowed out in a gripping semifinal against Amanda Anisimova, Osaka’s campaign reaffirmed her ability to blend motherhood with top-level performance — a milestone of a different kind.

A Tournament of Firsts

Together, Eala, Wong and Osaka turned the 2025 US Open into a landmark edition for Asian tennis. For the Philippines and Hong Kong, it was about making long-awaited debuts on tennis’ biggest stage. For Japan, Osaka’s return carried echoes of her past triumphs while pointing towards a promising future.
