Alexandra Eala has written a new chapter in Asian tennis history after winning the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C. The 21-year-old defeated top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6 6-4 6-0 in a rain-delayed final to claim the first WTA Tour singles title of her career. With the victory, Eala also became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles title.
It was a fitting end to an extraordinary week for the young Filipina, who defeated some of the biggest names in women’s tennis on her way to the trophy. She began by coming back from a set down to defeat Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the opening round. She then faced defending champion and seventh seed Leylah Fernandez, producing a confident straight-sets victory to continue her run.
The challenges became even greater in the later rounds. Eala overcame second seed Elina Svitolina before defeating third seed and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the semifinals. In the final, she recovered from a set down against top seed Jessica Pegula and finished the match with a commanding 6-0 deciding set. Five matches, five established opponents and one unforgettable title—the young Filipina earned her place in history the hard way.
Pegula made the stronger start and took the opening set 6-4. Eala was leading 2-1 in the second set when rain stopped play on Sunday and forced the remainder of the final to be moved to Monday.
When the players returned to the court, Eala looked ready for the occasion. She stayed patient, competed for every point and gradually took control of the match. After winning the second set 6-4, she delivered a commanding performance in the deciding set and completed the victory with a 6-0 scoreline.
The title is a landmark moment for tennis in the Philippines. It is also another proud achievement for Asian tennis, with Eala showing that players from the region can compete with and defeat the leading names on the world stage.
Her success in Washington follows an impressive period in her career. Eala arrived in North America after becoming the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
