A strong start in Colombo as India tops Week 1

The first week of the ITF Asia 14&U Development Championships Finals in Colombo, Sri Lanka came to a strong finish, with several young players producing impressive performances across singles and doubles.

India enjoyed a particularly good week and finished on top of the overall standings, ahead of Chinese Taipei and Korea Republic.
In the boys’ singles, India’s Puneeth Manohar, seeded second, claimed the title after beating Him Wong of Hong Kong, China in the final. Puneeth looked solid through the week and finished his campaign in the best possible way.

The girls’ singles title went to Ke-Chieh Hsu of Chinese Taipei, who defeated India’s Srishti Kiran in the final. Srishti also had a fine tournament and ended the week with a runner-up finish.
India had more strong results in singles, with Taanish Nanda finishing fourth in the boys’ event and Padmapriya Ramesh Kumar also taking fourth place in the girls’ section. Those results played an important part in helping India finish at the top of the Week 1 standings.
In doubles, Korea Republic’s third-seeded pair Seungyu Hong and Mingeon Choi won the boys’ doubles title. In the girls’ doubles, Ke-Chieh Hsu and Meng Chi of Chinese Taipei lifted the trophy after beating India’s Padmapriya Ramesh Kumar and Srishti Kiran in the final.

Overall, it was a very encouraging opening week for the Indian team, with a boys’ singles title, a girls’ singles runner-up finish, a girls’ doubles runner-up finish, and top-four results in both singles sections. Chinese Taipei also had an excellent week, especially in the girls’ events, while Korea Republic made its mark by winning the boys’ doubles title and finishing among the top teams.

Week 1 once again showed the value of this competition for the region’s young players. Events like the ITF Asia 14&U Development Championships give them the chance to compete against some of the best players from across Asia, gain important match experience, and continue their development in an international environment.
With the opening week now completed, Colombo has already delivered a number of strong performances and promising stories from the next generation of Asian tennis.
