Sep 17th, 2006

Chinese men's tennis players have vowed to defend their position in Asia's top tier of the Davis Cup team event.

China will continue to play in Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group I next year, should it defeat Pakistan in a play-off on Sept. 22-24."We are behind Pakistan in the world rankings, but both teams are almost at the same level," said China head coach Xie Zhao. "The match is wide open."

Pakistan is ranked 29th in the world, while China is 38th.Last year, China retained its place in Davis Cup Asia/Oceania zone Group I only after defeating Indonesia in a best-of-five play-off.
