Ting Li of China stunned top seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the opening round of the Guangzhou International Women's Open 2005 in Guangzhou, China. She defeated Zvonareva in two straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

In another first round match second seed Shuai Peng of China defeated Evie Dominikovic of Australia 6-3, 6-4.
