Nishikori gets Davis Cup spot
3 March 2008
Rising Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori has been named to the country's Davis Cup team for the first time, the Japan Tennis Association announced Friday. Nishikori, who became only the second Japanese to win an ATP tournament two weeks ago, is expected to play a key role when Japan travels to New Delhi for their meeting in the second round of Asia/Oceania Zone Group One on April 11 to 13. An appearance in a match against India will make him the youngest player in Japan's Davis Cup history at 18 years, 3 months. Nishikori moved into the limelight with his victory at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships, where he beat James Blake of the United States on Feb. 17 to become the first Japanese winner on the ATP Tour in 16 years.
