Shinobu Asagoe of Japan entered the second round of the A$ 19,300,000 Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia. She defeated Shahar Peer of Israel 3-6 6-1 6-4 in her first round match.
In another first round match, twenty-sixth seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan was upset by Conchita Martinez Granadoz of Spain 6-4 6-3.
