China's Li Na, the 24th seed in the grand slam event recovered to defeat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. she was the only one of the four Chinese players in first round action on the day to go through despite an ankle injury that hampered her movement. Peng Shuai let slip a golden opportunity to pull off a major upset when she went down 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to Swiss comeback queen Martina Hingis. un Tiantian then fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to Elena Likhovtseva of Russia and Yan Zi lost 6-0, 7-5 to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. That made it only two first round wins for the six-strong Chinese armada at Flushing Meadows. On Monday second-ranked Zheng Jie defeated Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, but Yuan Meng went down 6-3, 6-1 to Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
